1836 -- Telegraph. Cooke and Wheatstone patent it.

Revolutionised human (tele)communications.

Morse Code a series of dots and dashes used to communicate between humans. This is not a million miles away from how computers communicate via (binary 0/1) data today. Although it is much slower!


1858-1866 --

The Atlantic cable of 1858 was established to carry instantaneous communications across the ocean for the first time: it was a technical failure. It only remained in service a few days.
Subsequent cables laid in 1866 were completely successful and compare to events like the moon landing of a century later.  ... the cable ... remained in use for  almost 100 years.
Transatlantic cable. Allowed direct instantaneous communication across the atlantic.
Today, cables connect all continents and are still a main hub of telecommunications.


1876  -- Telephone. Alexander Graham Bell Exhibits.

Telephones exchanges provide the backbone of Internet connections today.
Modems provide Digital to Audio conversions to allow computers to connect over the telephone network.

Scientist Herb Grosch (the author of Grosch’s law) postulated that the entire world would operate on dumb terminals powered by about 15 large data centers.[A]

 

1957

USSR launches Sputnik, first artificial earth satellite. In response, US (Eisenhower) forms the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) within the Department of Defense (DoD) to establish US lead in science and technology applicable to the military (:amk:)

The organization united some of America's most brilliant people, who developed the United States' first successful satellite in 18 months. Several years later ARPA began to focus on computer networking and communications technology.

    Packet-switching (PS) networks developed; Why is this relevant?


    As we will see later the Internet relies on packets to transfer data.
    The origin is military :  for utmost security in transferring info of

    networks (no single outage point).
   Data is split into tiny packets that may take different routes to dest.
      Hard to eavesdrop on messages. More than one route available --
      if one route goes down another may be followed.
   Networks can withstand large scale destruction
       (Nuclear attack - This was the time of the Cold War).

J.C.R. Licklider & W. Clark, MIT: "On-Line Man Computer Communication" (August)

    Dr. J.C.R. Licklider was chosen to head ARPA's research in improving the military's use of computer technology. Licklider was a visionary who sought to make the government's use of computers more interactive. To quickly expand technology, Licklider saw the need to move ARPA's contracts from the private sector to universities and laid the foundations for what would become the ARPANET.

     It happened that the work at MIT (1961-1967), at RAND (1962-1965), and at NPL (1964-1967) had all proceeded in parallel without any of the researchers knowing about the other work.

     The plan was unprecedented: Kleinrock, a pioneering computer science professor at UCLA, and his small group of graduate students hoped to log onto the Stanford computer and try to send it some data. They would start by typing "login," and seeing if the letters appeared on the far-off monitor.

Ray Tomlinson of BBN invents email program to send messages across a distributed network. The original program was derived from two others: an intra-machine email program (SENDMSG) and an experimental file transfer program (CPYNET) (:amk:irh:)

ARPANET grinds to a complete halt on 27 October because of an accidentally-propagated status-message virus


First C/30-based IMP at BBN


 Tim Berners-Lee, an independent contractor at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Switzerland, built ENQUIRE, as a personal database of people and software models, but also as a way to play with hypertext; each new page of information in ENQUIRE had to be linked to an existing page.[1]

BITNET, the "Because It's Time NETwork"


CSNET (Computer Science NETwork) built by a collaboration of computer scientists and Univ of Delaware, Purdue Univ, Univ of Wisconsin, RAND Corporation and BBN through seed money granted by NSF to provide networking services (especially email) to university scientists with no access to ARPANET.

Norway leaves network to become an Internet connection via TCP/IP over SATNET; UCL follows suit


DCA and ARPA establish the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP), as the protocol suite, commonly known as TCP/IP, for ARPANET.

·         This leads to one of the first definitions of an "internet" as a connected set of networks, specifically those using TCP/IP, and "Internet" as connected TCP/IP internets.

In 1984 Berners-Lee returned to CERN, and considered its problems of information presentation: physicists from around the world needed to share data, and with no common machines and no common presentation software.

He wrote a proposal in March 1989 for "a large hypertext database with typed links", but it generated little interest. His boss, Mike Sendall, encouraged Berners-Lee to begin implementing his system on a newly acquired NeXT workstation.[4]

He considered several names, includingInformation Mesh,[5]The Information Mine(turned down as it abbreviates to TIM, the WWW's creator's name) or Mine of Information (turned down because it abbreviates to MOI which is "Me" in French), but settled on World Wide Web.[6]

Information Sciences Institute (ISI) at USC is given responsibility for DNS root management by DCA, and SRI for DNS NIC registrations

By Christmas 1990, Berners-Lee had built all the tools necessary for a working Web: the HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP) 0.9, the HyperText Markup Language (HTML), the first Web browser (named WorldWideWeb, which was also a Web editor), the first HTTP server software (later known as CERN httpd), the first web server (http://info.cern.ch), and the first Web pages that described the project itself.

Early websites intermingled links for both the HTTP web protocol and the then-popular Gopher protocol, which provided access to content through hypertext menus presented as a file system rather than throughHTML

 files.

Early Web users would navigate either by bookmarking popular directory pages, such as Berners-Lee's first site at http://info.cern.ch/, or by consulting updated lists such as the NCSA "What's New" page.

Some sites were also indexed by WAIS, enabling users to submit full-text searches similar to the capability later provided by search engines.

There was still no graphical browser available for computers besides the NeXT. This gap was filled in April 1992 with the release of Erwise, an application developed at the Helsinki University of Technology, and in May by ViolaWWW, created by Pei-Yuan Wei, which included advanced features such as embedded graphics, scripting, and animation.[7] ViolaWWW was originally an application for HyperCard. Both programs ran on the X Window System for Unix.[7]

Students at the University of Kansas adapted an existing text-only hypertext browser, Lynx, to access the web. Lynx was available on Unix and DOS, and some web designers, unimpressed with glossy graphical websites, held that a website not accessible through Lynx wasn’t worth visiting.

The turning point for the World Wide Web was the introduction[13] of the Mosaic web browser[14] in 1993, a graphical browser developed by a team at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), led by Marc Andreessen.

Funding for Mosaic came from the High-Performance Computing and Communications Initiative, a funding program initiated by then-Senator Al Gore's High Performance Computing and Communication Act of 1991 also known as the Gore Bill.[15]

After graduation from UIUC, Andreessen and James H. Clark, former CEO of Silicon Graphics, met and formed Mosaic Communications Corporation to develop the Mosaic browser commercially. The company changed its name to Netscape in April 1994, and the browser was developed further as Netscape Navigator.

Amazon.com introduced Amazon Web Services (AWS) on a utility computing basis in 2002. AWS is a collection of remote computing services (also called web services) that together make up a cloud computing platform, offered over the Internet by Amazon.com. This gave users the ability to store data and put a gigantic number of humans to work on very small tasks (such as MTurk Mechanical Turk), amongst other services.

The service was initially invented for Amazon's in-house use by Peter Cohen, to find duplicates among its web pages describing products.

2003

Public Interest Registry (PIR) takes over as .org registry operator on 1 Jan. By giving up .org, VeriSign is able to retain control over .com domains

The first official Swiss online election takes place in Anières (7 Jan)

The registration for domain ogrish.com is deleted (11 Jan) by the German registrar Joker.com at the request of a German prosecutor claiming objectionable content; the site however is hosted in the United States and complies with US laws.

The SQL Slammer worm causes one of the largest and fastest spreading DDoS attacks ever. Taking roughly 10 minutes to spread worldwide, the worm took down 5 of the 13 DNS root servers along with tens of thousands of other servers, and impacted a multitude of systems ranging from (bank) ATM systems to air traffic control to emergency (911) systems (25 Jan). This is followed in August by the Sobig.F virus (19 Aug), the fastest spreading virus ever, and the Blaster (MSBlast) worm (11 Aug), another one of the most destructive worms ever

.nl registrations open up to anyone, including individuals and foreigners (29 Jan); .se also opens up its registration in April.

.af is redelegated on 8 Jan and becomes live once again on 12 Feb with UNDP technical assistance. First domains are moc.gov.af and undp.org.af (15 Feb)

Network Solutions begins offering 100 year domain registration (24 Mar)

VeriSign Naming and Directory Service (VNDS) begins updating all 13 .com/.net authoritative name servers in near real-time vs. twice each day (8 Sep)

Lycos Europe releases a screen saver to help fight spam by keeping spam servers busy with requests (1 Dec). The service is discontinued within a few days after backbone providers block access to the download site and the service causese some servers to crash.

CERNET2, the first backbone IPv6 network in China, is launched by the China Education and Research Network (CERN) connecting 25 universities in 20 cities at speeds of 1-10Gbps (27 Dec)


Facebook was founded in 2004, revolutionising the way users communicate and the way they store their own data (their photos and video), inadvertently making the cloud a personal service.


2006

Amazon expanded its cloud services. First was its Elastic Compute cloud (EC2), which allowed people to access computers and run their own applications on them, all on the cloud. Then they brought out Simple Storage Service (S3). This introduced the pay-as-you-go model to both users and the industry as a whole, and it has basically become standard practice now.


2007

Salesforce launches Force.com, a web productivity tool. Force.com is a cloud computing platform as a service system from Salesforce.com. This platform as a service (PaaS) let companies’ developers build, store and run all of the apps and websites they needed to run their business in the cloud. 


2008

2008: Eucalyptus became the first open-source, AWS API-compatible platform for deploying private clouds. Eucalyptus is a software platform for the implementation of private cloud computing on computer clusters. OpenNebula became the first open-source software for deploying private and hybrid clouds. OpenNebula is an open-source cloud computing toolkit for managing heterogeneous distributed data center infrastructures. OpenNebula is sponsored by C12G. C12G Labs is an enterprise software company which provides OpenNebula-based software and services. C12G (numeronym for Cloud Computing) was founded in April 2010.


Salesforce.com introduced the cloud-based database at Database.com for developers, marking the development of could computing services that can be used on any device, run on any platform and written in any programming language.

But it wasn't until 2008, when Google and Microsoft entered the playing field, that cloud use really became a widespread effort to bring the technology mainstream.

The Google App Engine brought low-cost computing and storage services, popularizing the concept; by 2009, Google Apps allowed people to store documents within the cloud.

Microsoft followed suit with Windows Azure, solidifying the cloud as a market that the tech giants would be expanding and competing in.

2010

Apple put a stake in the field by developing the iCloud, allowing users to sync photos, apps, music and documents across a string of devices.


2007-2010

With launch of iPhone, HTC’s first Android phone, Android-Apps, Samsung’s smartphone and a whooping sale of 1 million iPad in the first month of it’s launch, the enterprise market saw huge transformation that scripted a completely different IT market story driven totally by consumers. Cloud services got much needed boost with the launch of i-services for iPhone and iPad costumers. Cloud applications hosted on far away Data Centers became a rage which ultimately launched the golden era of cloud computing and services based upon “as a servrice” delivery-model.


2011

2011: The year that truely made a mark for Cloud Computing. Several start-ups were founded that leveraged the cloud services.
